The positioning-filter skill: lock the one angle that's yours

4 minute readUpdated August 2026Explore more

TL;DR

positioning-filter is a free skill in our public freeskills repo. You install it by copying a folder, type /positioning-filter, and answer three questions plus a cut test. It saves a positioning statement and a one-line differentiator to ~/offers/positioning.md that you can paste into your bio tonight.

Most offers don't fail because they're bad. They fail because they're indistinct. If your page could have someone else's name on it and still read fine, nobody has a reason to pick you.

Here's what that looks like in practice. You sit down to write your bio, and everything you type sounds like the last five people in your niche. So you rewrite it. It still sounds like them. That loop keeps running until you lock an angle, and most people never sit down and do it.

The positioning-filter skill is one of the 55 free skills in our freeskills repo, and it does exactly that job. It runs you through three questions, forces a cut test, and saves a positioning statement plus a one-line differentiator you can reuse on your bio, your content, and your sales page.

positioning-filter

The three questions, the cut test, and the shape the positioning statement gets written in.

Install the positioning-filter skill

A skill is just a folder with instructions inside. You copy it into your Claude Code skills directory and it becomes a slash command. Three lines in your terminal:

bashgit clone https://github.com/duncan-buildroom/freeskills.git
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
cp -r freeskills/positioning-filter ~/.claude/skills/

Restart Claude Code, or just start a new session. That's the whole install. No API keys, no config.

Run it the first time

Type /positioning-filter in Claude Code. It pulls what you do, who you serve, and your proof from your brand profile, then asks you to finish sentences like "Everyone in my niche says ___. I say ___ instead." It'll push you for a real contrast, because an angle that agrees with the default advice isn't an angle.

Then it runs the cut test: who this is explicitly not for, and the topics you're deliberately not going to cover. At the end it writes everything to ~/offers/positioning.md and hands you a one-line differentiator. A good first run takes about ten minutes and ends with a sentence you'd actually put in your bio today. If you hand it three angles, it'll make you pick one.

Lock your angle before you write anything else

Run this the first time, before a sales page or a week of content. Give it the common advice in your niche so it has something to push against.

/positioning-filter

What I do: [what you actually do for people]
Who it's for: [your audience, be specific]
The usual advice in my niche: [what everyone else says]
My weird background: [a past job, a skill from another world, your own transformation]

I want one angle I can defend and a single line I can paste into my bio today.

Pressure-test the bio you already have

Once the statement is saved, point the skill at what's currently live. This is where most people find out how much of their bio is filler.

Here's my current bio: [paste it]

Compare it to the positioning we just locked. Show me which lines could belong to anyone in my niche, and rewrite those lines so only I could have written them. Keep it the same length.

Get the sentence you say out loud

The written statement is for pages. You also need the version you say when someone asks what you do at a party or on a call.

Take the positioning statement and give me the spoken version. Two sentences max, plain words, no jargon. It should end with the specific person it's for so they know it's them.

The 60-second version

Here's what the skill does and why it's worth an hour, in the version you'd say to a friend.

  1. 1Hook: there's a brand new free Claude skill that takes you from sounding like everyone else in your niche to one angle you can say in a single sentence.
  2. 2Mechanism: you tell it what you do and who you do it for. It walks you through three questions, what your angle actually is, why your audience would care in their own words, and how that angle points at the thing you sell. Then it runs the cut test, naming who this is explicitly not for and the topics you'll stop covering, and hands back a positioning statement plus one line short enough for your bio.
  3. 3Transformation: you stop rewriting your bio every week. You write the page once, and the right person knows in five seconds that it's for them.
  4. 4Close: the skill is free and the repo it came out of holds 54 more. Living up to the angle you just locked is the work we do inside Claude Code Club, $9 a month. Link's below.

Tonight: install it, run it once, and paste the one-liner it gives you into one profile. One bio, one place. That's the whole job for today.

Common questions

  • Do I need to know how to code?

No. You run three copy-paste lines in your terminal to install the folder, then you answer questions in plain English. The skill writes the file itself.

  • Is it really free?

Yes. The whole repo is public and there are no API keys, accounts, or paid tools involved. Claude Code Club is a separate thing you'd join if you want the full path and the community.

  • What if I don't have a brand profile yet?

Install the personalize skill from the same repo and run /personalize first. If you skip it, the skill will ask you for your name, niche, offer, and audience directly and save the answers so you only give them once.

  • What if I have three angles I like?

The skill makes you pick one and lock it. You can test the others later. A diffuse position is the failure mode it exists to prevent.

  • What if my angle doesn't point at anything I sell?

That's a real signal and the skill flags it. Either the offer needs fixing or the angle does. The offer-builder skill in the same repo handles the offer side.
