The bio-writer skill: a bio that makes the right person stay
TL;DR
bio-writer gives you five versions of your bio at the correct length for each platform: Instagram at 150 characters, a LinkedIn headline and About section, X at 160, and a one-liner. Clone the repo, copy one folder, type /bio-writer. It saves everything to a file with the character counts.
Your bio gets about two seconds. In that time it has to tell the right person they're in the right place and tell everybody else to keep scrolling. Most bios try to please both groups and end up doing neither, which is how you get a profile full of job titles that nobody follows.
bio-writer builds each version from three ingredients: what you do in plain words, who it's for, and one real proof point. Then it writes Instagram, the LinkedIn headline and About section, X, and a one-liner, each at the right length and register, and states the character count next to each one.
It's free and public. The folder goes in your skills directory and it's live.
Writes five bios from what you do, who it's for, and one real proof point. Free, one folder, no keys.
Install the bio-writer skill
Clone the repo, copy the folder into the directory Claude Code reads skills from.
bashgit clone https://github.com/duncan-buildroom/freeskills.git
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
cp -r freeskills/bio-writer ~/.claude/skills/Open a new Claude Code session and it's ready. That's it. No API keys, no config.
Run it the first time
Type /bio-writer. It pulls what it can from your profile and only asks for what's missing: what you do in plain words, who it's for, and one real proof point. A number, a result, a credential, or a thing you made. One, not three. If you've got no proof point yet, a current build counts. Building this in public is honest and it works.
Before it writes anything it runs a check on your answer to what do you do. If it could describe fifty other people in your niche, or your audience is everyone, it stops and tells you the angle is the problem rather than the wording. That's a real answer, not a dodge. Otherwise it writes all five versions and saves them to ~/brand/bio.md in copy-ready blocks with character counts. Update the LinkedIn headline first. It shows up in more places than anything else you own.
Get all five bios in one pass
Give it the three ingredients in one message and it writes everything. Say the proof point exactly as it happened, no rounding up.
/bio-writer
What I do: [the thing that happens because of you, in plain words]. Who it's for: [specific enough that someone knows if it's them]. My one proof point: [a real number, a real result, or the thing you're building right now]. Write all five versions.Fix the LinkedIn headline you already have
If you only change one thing this week, change this. Paste what's there now and say what's actually true about your work.
/bio-writer
Just the LinkedIn headline and About section. Here's my current headline: [paste it]. What I actually do is [plain words], for [who], and the realest thing I can point at is [proof point]. Tell me what's wrong with the current one before you rewrite it.Write the bio when you have nothing to show yet
Brand new counts. The skill uses your current build as the proof point instead of a number, and it will not fake one to fill the slot.
/bio-writer
I'm early. No clients, no numbers yet. I'm building [the thing] for [who it's for] and I'm [how far in, e.g. two weeks / day 14]. Use the build as the proof point. Write the Instagram, X, and one-liner versions. The 60-second version
The out-loud version of what this skill does and why it's worth running.
- 1Hook: there's a brand new free Claude skill that takes you from a bio that lists what you are, to one that tells the right person to stay.
- 2Mechanism: you give it three things, what you do in plain words, who it's for, and one real proof point. It runs a mush check first and will tell you straight if the angle is the problem rather than the writing. Then it writes five versions with the character count next to each: your Instagram bio, your LinkedIn headline and About section, your X bio, and the one line you say when someone asks what you do.
- 3Transformation: people land on your profile and know in two seconds whether you're for them. The ones who are, follow. The ones who aren't, leave, and that's a win too.
- 4Close: the bio is free, one of 55 skills. If you want something worth linking to underneath it, Claude Code Club is 9 dollars a month. Link below.
Tonight: install it, run it, and paste the new LinkedIn headline in before you close the laptop. It's the one that shows up everywhere.
Common questions
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Three lines in the terminal to copy a folder, then you answer three questions about your own work.
Is it really free?
Yes. It's a folder in a public repo. No API keys, no account, nothing to pay beyond the Claude Code you already have.
What if I have no results to point at?
Use the build you're working on right now. Building this in public, day 14 is a legitimate proof point for someone early, because it shows motion. The skill will never invent a number or a client count to fill the gap.
What if I do three different things?
The bio has to pick one. The skill says so directly, because a bio that hedges across three lanes converts on none of them.
What if my answer to what do you do is vague?
The skill checks for that before it writes a word. If your answer could describe fifty other people, or your audience is everyone or businesses, it stops and tells you the angle needs fixing before the wording is worth touching, and points you at the positioning-filter skill.
