5 prompts to build your first Claude skill

3 minute readUpdated June 2026Explore more

TL;DR

These five prompts turn a task you repeat every week into a skill you run with one slash command: Claude interviews you about the task, builds it, tests it on a real example, and tunes it. About 15 minutes; the interview in prompt 1 is the longest part.

Copy each prompt, fill in the [brackets], and paste them into Claude Code in order. Pick the task you're most tired of explaining over and over — that's your first skill.

Tell Claude the task you keep repeating

I keep asking you to do the same thing: [the task you repeat, e.g. 'turn my rough notes into a client email']. I want that as a skill I can run with one command. First, interview me: ask me whatever you need to know to do this task perfectly every time, one question at a time, my format, my rules, my examples.

Build the skill

Now build the skill. Create it so when I type /[skillname], you do the whole thing exactly the way we just defined. Save everything where it needs to live and tell me what you created.

Run a real test

Test run: /[skillname] with this input: [paste a real example]. Show me the output.

Tune it so it's right every time

Here's what I'd tweak: [what you'd change]. Update the skill itself so it comes out like this every time, not just this once.

Now that I've seen one: give me a list of 5 more skills you think I should build, based on what you know about how I work. Rank them by time saved per week.

Common questions

  • Do I need to know how to code?

No. Claude builds the skill files itself and saves them where they need to live. You describe the task and answer the interview questions.

  • Where do I paste these?

Into Claude Code. Skills are a Claude Code feature — a saved set of instructions you trigger with a slash command, which the web chat doesn't have.

  • What makes a good first skill?

A task you've asked Claude to do the same way at least three times — notes into an email, a weekly report, a post format. If you're re-explaining it, it should be a skill. Prompt 5 ranks five more candidates by time saved per week.
