Rainy-Day Kids Crafts From Stuff You Already Have
TL;DR
When the kids are climbing the walls and the shops are shut, you don't need supplies - you need ideas. Tell Claude their ages and what's already in the house, paste one prompt, and it gives you craft and activity ideas that use only what you have, with setup, mess level, and how long each will keep them busy. Plain chat, no terminal, no code.
What you'll have in 5 minutes
A short list of crafts and activities matched to your kids' ages, using only things most homes already have - paper, tape, cardboard, markers, an old magazine. Each one tells you what to grab, how messy it gets, and roughly how long it'll keep them occupied, so you can pick the right one for the moment.
This is not an app or a subscription box. It happens in a normal chat with Claude, the same way you'd ask any AI a question. If you can send a text, you can do this.
What you need (all free, no terminal)
- Claude - the free Claude Desktop app (Mac or Windows) or claude.ai in your browser. Nothing to set up beyond signing in.
- Your kids' ages and a quick look around at what you've actually got.
- That's it. No connectors, no command line, no code.
Step 1: Take stock of the junk drawer
Glance at what's lying around - cardboard boxes, paper, tape, glue, old socks, dry pasta, paper plates. The more specific you are about what you have, the better the ideas, because Claude builds the crafts around your actual supplies instead of a shopping list.
Step 2: Paste the prompt
Paste this into ClaudeGive me [5] craft and activity ideas to keep my kids busy this
afternoon. They're [ages 4 and 7]. I do NOT want to buy anything -
use only common stuff most homes have.
Here's what I actually have: [cardboard boxes, paper, markers, tape,
glue, paper plates, dry pasta]. Build the ideas around these.
For each idea, give me: a name, what to grab, the steps in plain
language, how messy it is (low/medium/high), and roughly how long it
will keep them busy. Make a couple low-mess in case I'm not in the
mood to clean up. Ask me anything you need first.Step 3: Pick one and go
Claude hands you the list. Choose by mess level and time - a low-mess one before dinner, the big cardboard build for a long afternoon. If an idea is too advanced or too babyish, say so and it adjusts to the right age.
Common questions
Do I need to know how to code for this?
No. It all happens in a normal chat with Claude - the free desktop app or claude.ai in your browser. You paste a prompt and talk to it like you'd text a friend. There is no terminal and nothing to install beyond signing in.
What if I don't have the things in the example?
List what you do have instead. The whole point is that Claude builds the crafts around your actual supplies, so the more honestly you describe your junk drawer, the better the ideas.
Are the ideas age-appropriate and safe?
Tell Claude the ages and it matches the difficulty. You're still the parent in the room - check anything involving scissors, small parts, or a hot glue gun, and ask it to keep ideas safe for the youngest child if they'll all be joining in.
Can I get low-mess ideas only?
Yes. Ask for low-mess or no-mess activities and it skips the paint and glitter, leaning on building, sorting, and drawing instead.
Will it work for one kid or a group?
Both. Tell it how many kids and their ages and it scales the ideas - solo quiet-time crafts, or group activities they can do together without fighting over the one pair of scissors.
Does this cost anything?
No. You can get a full list on a free Claude account. The Claude Code Club community is a separate, optional $9 a month for the advanced family-activity systems, but you do not need it to rescue a rainy afternoon.
