Build a Summer Activity Calendar for Kids With AI

TL;DR

Summer with no plan turns into screens and 'I'm bored' by 9am. Tell Claude your kids' ages, your budget, and how much you're around, and it builds a week-by-week calendar of activities - free and paid, indoor and outdoor, with rainy-day backups. A loose structure that saves your sanity. Plain chat, no code.

What you'll have in 10 minutes

A week-by-week summer plan with a mix of activities for your kids' ages - free park-and-library days, a few paid outings, indoor crafts for hot afternoons, and rainy-day backups - paced so it's a loose rhythm, not a rigid schedule you'll abandon. Enough structure that the days have a shape and you're not improvising entertainment every morning.

No planning app, no endless searching. It happens in a normal chat with Claude.

What you need (all free, no terminal)

  • Claude - the free Claude Desktop app or claude.ai in your browser.
  • Your kids' ages, how many weeks of summer, your rough budget, whether you're home or working, and any camps or trips already booked.
  • No connectors, no command line, no code.

Step 1: Map your summer

Note your kids' ages, how many weeks you need to fill, what's already on the calendar (camps, vacations, visitors), your budget, and whether you're around or juggling work. Real constraints make a plan you'll use, not a fantasy of crafts you'll never set up.

Step 2: Paste the prompt

Start a new chat and paste this with your details. It asks Claude for a balanced, budget-aware week-by-week plan.

Paste this into ClaudeBuild me a summer activity calendar for my kids, aged [5 and 9], for
[8 weeks]. My budget for paid activities is [low - mostly free, a few
special outings]. I'm [working from home most days]. Already booked:
[one week of camp in July, a beach trip in August].

Give me a week-by-week plan with a loose daily rhythm - a mix of free
activities (park, library, backyard, crafts), a few paid outings
spread out, indoor ideas for hot or rainy days, and quiet-time ideas
for when I need to work. Keep it age-appropriate for both kids and
realistic, not a packed schedule. Group any supplies I'd need to buy.

Step 3: Use it loosely and adjust

Claude gives you the calendar. Treat it as a menu, not a mandate - some days you'll follow it, some you won't. Tell it what's working: "the 9-year-old needs more," "add a weekly friend playdate," "more screen-free quiet-time ideas." Stick the week's plan on the fridge so the kids can see what's coming.

Common questions

  • Do I need to know how to code?

No. You describe your summer in a normal chat with Claude and paste a prompt. There is no terminal and nothing to install beyond the free Claude app or claude.ai.

  • Can it plan for more than one kid?

Yes. Give it both ages and it balances activities that work for the range, plus separate ideas when they need different things. Tell it if one needs more challenge or one needs naps and it adjusts.

  • Will the activities fit my budget?

Tell Claude your budget and it leans on free options - parks, libraries, backyard play, crafts - with paid outings spread out. You can ask it to make the whole plan free, or to suggest cheap or free local-type activities to look for.

  • What about days I have to work?

Say so and Claude includes quiet-time and independent-play ideas for the hours you're busy, so the plan fits a working-parent summer rather than assuming you're free all day.

  • Can it suggest indoor and rainy-day options?

Yes. The prompt asks for indoor ideas for hot or rainy days, so a washed-out afternoon doesn't derail the whole day. You can ask for a deeper list of bad-weather activities any time.

  • Does this cost anything?

No. You can build the calendar on a free Claude account. The Claude Code Club community is a separate, optional $9 a month for the advanced family-planning systems, but you do not need it to plan a summer.
