Plan a Holiday Gift Budget and Tracker With AI
TL;DR
Holiday spending creeps because there's no plan - just a pile of people and good intentions. Tell Claude your total budget and who's on your list, and it splits the money sensibly, suggests gift ideas in each person's price range, and gives you a tracker so you stay on budget. The fun of giving without the January regret. Plain chat, no code.
What you'll have in 10 minutes
A complete gift plan: your total budget split across everyone on your list (more for the kids, less for the office swap), a few gift ideas per person in their price range, and a simple tracker so you can mark off what's bought and see what's left. The difference between mindful giving and a credit-card hangover in January.
No spreadsheet, no guesswork. It happens in a normal chat with Claude.
What you need (all free, no terminal)
- Claude - the free Claude Desktop app or claude.ai in your browser.
- Your total gift budget and a list of who you're buying for - with a word on each person's interests if you want gift ideas.
- No connectors, no command line, no code.
Step 1: Set the total and the list
Decide the one number you're willing to spend in total, then list everyone you're buying for. Add a few words about each person's age and interests if you'd like ideas. Starting from a fixed total is what keeps the whole thing from ballooning.
Step 2: Paste the prompt
Start a new chat and paste this with your details. It asks Claude to split the budget, suggest ideas, and build a tracker.
Paste this into ClaudeHelp me plan my holiday gift budget. My total is [$500]. Here's who
I'm buying for and a bit about them:
[2 kids (8, 11) - Legos, art], [partner - coffee, hiking], [mom -
gardening], [2 coworkers - small gifts], [a few host/teacher gifts].
Split my total sensibly across everyone (more for close family, less
for small gifts), then suggest 2-3 gift ideas per person within their
share of the budget. Give me a tracker table: person, budget,
idea(s), spent, and a running total so I can stay under $500. Flag if
my list is realistically too big for the budget.Step 3: Shop and track
Claude hands you the plan and tracker. As you buy, update what you spent - "got mom's gift for $35" - and ask it to show what's left. Over on one person? Ask where to trim. You end the season on budget with everyone covered.
Common questions
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You list your budget and people in a normal chat with Claude and paste a prompt. There is no terminal and nothing to install beyond the free Claude app or claude.ai.
Can it suggest actual gift ideas?
Yes. Add a few words about each person's age and interests and Claude suggests ideas within their share of the budget. Ask for more options, a different price point, or homemade ideas any time.
Will it keep me on budget?
That's the point. It splits your total across the list, tracks what you spend, and shows the running total so you can see before you overspend. If you go over on one person, ask it where to trim to get back under.
What if my list is too big for my budget?
The prompt asks Claude to flag exactly that. It'll tell you if the numbers don't work and suggest options - smaller per-person amounts, a gift swap, or a price cap with family - so you can adjust before you start buying.
Can I update the tracker as I shop?
Yes. Just tell Claude what you bought and for how much, and it updates the spent column and the remaining total. It's a living plan, not a one-time list.
Does this cost anything?
No. You can plan the whole budget on a free Claude account. The Claude Code Club community is a separate, optional $9 a month for the advanced gifting and money systems, but you do not need it to plan one holiday.
