Find Subscriptions to Cancel From Your Bank Statement With AI

5 minute readUpdated June 2026Explore more

TL;DR

Forgotten subscriptions quietly drain $50 to $100 a month from most households. Paste a month or two of bank statement into Claude and ask it to pull out every recurring charge, flag the ones that look like dead trials or unused apps, and total what you'd save by cancelling. You do the cancelling - it just finds the leaks. Plain chat, no code.

What you'll have in 5 minutes

A clean list of every recurring charge hiding in your account - streaming you doubled up on, the trial that started billing, the app you used once - with a flag on the ones worth a second look and a running total of what cancelling them saves you each month and each year.

Claude finds the charges; you decide what to cancel and do it yourself. It does not touch your bank or cancel anything for you - it's reading a statement the same way you would, just faster and without missing the small ones.

What you need (all free, no terminal)

  • Claude - the free Claude Desktop app or claude.ai in your browser.
  • One or two months of your bank or card statement. You can paste the text in, or upload a PDF or screenshot.
  • No connectors, no command line, no code.

Step 1: Get your statement ready

Download a month or two from your bank's site, or take screenshots. More than one month is better, because a yearly subscription only shows up once. Remove your account number, then move on.

Step 2: Paste or upload, then paste this

Start a new chat, add your statement (paste the text or attach the file), and paste the prompt below.

Paste this into Claude (with your statement)Here is one to two months of my bank statement. Find every recurring
or subscription-style charge - streaming, apps, memberships,
software, anything that bills on a schedule.

Make a table: merchant, how much, how often, and a flag for the ones
that look like forgotten free trials, duplicates (two services that
do the same thing), or things people commonly cancel. Then total the
monthly cost of everything flagged and show me the yearly figure if I
cancelled them all. Don't include normal one-off purchases like
groceries or gas.

Step 3: Decide and cancel

Claude hands you the list and the savings. Go down it and ask yourself which you actually use. For the ones you want gone, you cancel them yourself in each app or account - Claude can't and shouldn't do that for you. Ask it "how do I usually cancel [service]?" if you're not sure where to look.

Common questions

  • Do I need to know how to code?

No. You paste or upload your statement into a normal chat with Claude and paste a prompt. There is no terminal, no command line, and nothing to install beyond the free Claude app or claude.ai.

  • Is it safe to share my bank statement?

Black out your account number and any digits you're uneasy about first - Claude only needs merchant names and amounts to find subscriptions. You're pasting text into a chat, not connecting your bank; it has no access to your accounts or money.

  • Can Claude cancel the subscriptions for me?

No, and it shouldn't - it has no access to your accounts. It finds the charges and shows the savings; you cancel the ones you choose, yourself, in each app or account. You can ask it for the usual steps to cancel a given service.

  • Why upload more than one month?

Some subscriptions bill yearly or every few months, so a single statement misses them. Two or three months catches the annual charges and gives Claude a clearer picture of what's truly recurring versus a one-off.

  • What if it flags something I actually use?

It only flags charges for your review - nothing is decided for you. Skip anything you want to keep. You can also tell Claude which services you use and ask it to re-rank the rest by how likely they are to be waste.

  • Does this cost anything?

No. You can audit your statement on a free Claude account. The Claude Code Club community is a separate, optional $9 a month for the advanced money-tracking systems, but you do not need it to find subscriptions once.
