TL;DR
You don't need to be a spreadsheet person to have a budget. Tell Claude your income and costs - it asks for them one group at a time so you're never staring at a blank sheet - and it shows you what's coming in, what's going out, what's left, and three realistic places to cut. It all happens in a plain chat, no code and no math from you.
What you'll have in 10 minutes
A clear picture of your money: what comes in, what goes out, what's left over, and where it's actually going. Plus a simple plan to put a set amount into savings each month. No complicated app, no spreadsheet formulas - just answers in plain language.
What you need (all free, no terminal)
- Claude - the free Claude Desktop app or claude.ai in your browser.
- A rough idea of your monthly take-home pay and your regular bills. You can grab numbers from your banking app as you go - Claude asks for them one at a time.
- No connectors, no command line, no code.
Step 1: Paste the prompt
Start a new chat and paste the prompt below. Instead of dumping everything at once, it walks you through your finances one category at a time, so it never feels overwhelming.
Paste this into ClaudeI want to build a simple monthly family budget and I'm not a
spreadsheet person. Ask me for my numbers one group at a time so I'm
not overwhelmed: take-home income first, then housing, food,
transport, kids, subscriptions, debt payments, savings, and fun.
Wait for each answer before asking the next.
When you have everything, show me: total income, total spending,
what's left over, and the percentage going to each group. Flag
anything that looks high, suggest 3 realistic places I could cut
without making life miserable, and give me a simple plan to save a
set amount each month. Keep it plain - no jargon, no lecturing.Step 2: Answer as you go
Claude asks one question at a time. Pull each number from your banking app as it comes up. Don't have an exact figure? Give your best estimate - you can refine it later. The point is a budget that exists, not a perfect one.
Step 3: Get your plan and adjust
You'll get a clear breakdown and three places to cut. Push back freely: "we can't cut groceries, what else?" or "show me how to save for a holiday instead." It reworks the plan instantly. Screenshot the final version so you can check against it each month.
Common questions
Do I need to know how to code or use spreadsheets?
Neither. You answer simple questions in a normal chat and Claude does the math and the layout. There is no terminal, no formulas, and nothing to install beyond the free Claude app or claude.ai.
Does it connect to my bank?
No. It only sees the numbers you choose to type in. There is no link to your bank or accounts - you stay completely in control of what you share, and you can use round estimates if you prefer.
Is my financial information safe?
You are sharing figures in a chat, not granting access to anything. Share only what you're comfortable with - you can use approximate numbers and still get a useful budget. Nothing is connected to your real accounts.
What if my income changes every month?
Tell Claude that. It can build the budget around your average or your lowest typical month, which is the safer way to plan irregular income. Just say 'my income varies' and it will adjust the approach.
Will it actually help me save?
It shows you where the money goes, flags what looks high, and gives you a concrete savings amount and plan. Seeing it laid out plainly is usually the thing that makes saving finally click. Acting on it is up to you.
Does this cost anything?
No. You can build the whole budget on a free Claude account. The Claude Code Club community is a separate, optional $9 a month for the advanced money systems, but you do not need it to make your budget.
