See (and Delete) Everything Claude Remembers About You: The Memory Audit Prompt

6 minute readUpdated October 2026Explore more

TL;DR

Claude's chat memory saves facts about you as topics while you talk: your role, projects, the people in your work and life, and how you like answers. Paste the audit prompt below and Claude writes out what it has stored. Then open Settings > Memory, read each topic under Topics, and edit or delete anything you don't want kept. Settings > Memory is the real list. The prompt is a fast way to read it. Every step below comes from Anthropic's help center, checked on October 3, 2026.

Claude remembers more about you than most people realize. On Free, Pro and Max plans, memory is on by default on the web, Claude Desktop and Claude Mobile. Claude saves memory as a set of topics as you chat, and it saves on its own, not only when you say "remember this." This page gives you the prompts to see what it has, and the exact steps to change it.

What Claude's memory actually stores

Anthropic's help center lists the kind of context Claude keeps:

  • Your role, projects and professional context
  • The people and places in your work and life
  • Communication preferences and working style
  • Technical preferences and coding style
  • Project details and ongoing work

Each project has its own separate memory space, so a project's memory stays apart from your other chats.

Prompt 1: the memory audit

Open a normal chat (not an incognito chat, and not one with memory turned off) and paste this. The first sentence is the wording Anthropic itself suggests for getting your memory out of Claude.

promptWrite out your memories of me verbatim, exactly as they appear in your memory.

Then put every entry in a table with four columns:
1. Topic
2. What you have stored (word for word)
3. What kind of chat it probably came from (work, personal, a project, a one-off question)
4. How personal it is (low, medium, high)

Rules:
- Do not summarize, merge or skip any entries.
- Only list what is actually in your memory. If you are not sure something is stored, leave it out and say so.
- After the table, tell me whether that is the complete set or whether any entries remain.

Prompt 2: names, people and places

Memory can include other people: your boss, your partner, your clients. This prompt pulls them out so you can decide what stays.

promptFrom your memory of me only, list every person, company and place you have stored.

For each one give me:
- the name
- what you have stored about them
- why you saved it (what it helps you do for me)

Flag any entry that is mostly about someone other than me. Do not add anything that is not already in your memory.

Prompt 3: the cleanup list

promptReview your memory of me and sort every entry into one of four groups:

KEEP: useful and correct
FIX: out of date or wrong (tell me what looks wrong)
TOO PERSONAL: more private than a work assistant needs
NOT ABOUT ME: mostly about another person

For every entry in FIX, TOO PERSONAL or NOT ABOUT ME, write the exact sentence I can send you to change or forget it. Do not change anything yet. Wait for me to decide.

Prompt 4: forget something from inside a chat

Anthropic says you can tell Claude what to remember, change or forget, and the update applies to your next conversation.

promptForget [the thing you want gone, e.g. my old job at Acme, or anything about my sister].
Remove it from your memory and tell me exactly what you removed.

Then start a new chat and ask "What do you remember about [that thing]?" to check it is gone. Settings > Memory is still the place to confirm.

Delete or edit memory in Settings (the real list)

  1. 1Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop.
  2. 2Go to Settings > Memory.
  3. 3Everything Claude remembers is listed under Topics. Select a topic to read it.
  4. 4Use the edit icon to change it, or select Delete to remove it.
  5. 5A fix in one topic applies to every conversation from then on.

Pause, reset, or turn memory off for one chat

  • Pause memory: in Settings > Memory, click the Generate memory from chats toggle and choose Pause. Claude keeps what it has but won't use it or save anything new.
  • Reset memory: same toggle, choose Reset. This permanently deletes all memories, including project memories, and cannot be undone.
  • One chat without memory: start a new chat, click + in the message box and turn off Memory before you send the first message. Nothing from that chat is saved to memory, and the chat stays in your history.
  • Incognito chat: click the ghost icon in the top right of a new chat outside a project. Incognito chats are not saved to memory or to your chat history.
  • Past chat search is a separate switch: turn off Search and reference chats in Settings > Memory if you don't want Claude looking through old conversations.

Claude chat memory vs Claude Code memory

Everything above is about memory in the Claude app (web, Desktop and Mobile), which Anthropic says is shared with Claude Cowork when Cowork runs in the cloud. Claude Code is documented separately. Its memory is two kinds of files on your computer: CLAUDE.md files that you write, and auto memory notes Claude writes to ~/.claude/projects/<project>/memory/. Run /memory inside Claude Code to see, open and edit those files, and to turn auto memory on or off.

A two-minute routine

  1. 1Paste Prompt 1 and read the table.
  2. 2Open Settings > Memory and delete or edit any topic you don't want kept.
  3. 3For private one-off questions, start the chat with Memory off in the + menu, or use an incognito chat.
  4. 4Repeat every month or two. Claude keeps saving as you chat.

Now you just decide what Claude remembers. Inside the Claude Code Club we share the memory and context setups we actually run, for the Claude app and for Claude Code, and help each other set them up. It's nine dollars a month at https://www.skool.com/claudecodeclub/about. Everything on this page works without it.

Common questions

  • How do I see everything Claude remembers about me?

Go to Settings > Memory. Everything Claude remembers is listed under Topics, and you can select each one to read it. You can also ask in a chat: "Write out your memories of me verbatim, exactly as they appear in your memory." Settings > Memory is the list to trust.

  • How do I delete a Claude memory?

In Settings > Memory, select the topic under Topics and choose Delete, or use the edit icon to change it. You can also tell Claude in a chat to forget something, and the change applies to your next conversation. To wipe everything, use Reset memory, which is permanent.

  • If I delete a chat, does Claude forget what it learned from it?

No. Anthropic says memory entries generated from a conversation are not removed when that conversation expires or is deleted. Delete the memory itself in Settings > Memory.

  • Is Claude memory on by default?

Yes on Free, Pro and Max plans, on the web, Claude Desktop and Claude Mobile. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner has to make memory available, and it stays off for each member until they turn it on.

  • Is this the same as CLAUDE.md in Claude Code?

No. Claude Code's memory is files on your computer: CLAUDE.md files you write and auto memory notes Claude writes. You manage them with the /memory command inside Claude Code, not in the Claude app's Settings > Memory.
