TL;DR
A generic resume gets ignored; a tailored one gets read. Paste your experience and the job posting into Claude, and it writes a clear resume and a cover letter aimed at that specific role - mirroring the language the employer used, honestly, from what you actually did. You review and make it yours. Plain chat, no code.
What you'll have in 15 minutes
A clean, readable resume and a cover letter written for one specific job - not a one-size document. Claude pulls the skills and wording the posting asks for and matches them to your real experience, so a recruiter (and the software that screens resumes) sees the fit immediately. You get a strong first draft to refine, instead of a blank page.
No template wrestling, no design software. It happens in a normal chat with Claude.
What you need (all free, no terminal)
- Claude - the free Claude Desktop app or claude.ai in your browser.
- Your experience (an old resume, a LinkedIn export, or just bullet points you type out) and the job posting you're applying for.
- No connectors, no command line, no code.
Step 1: Gather your material
Collect what you've done - past jobs, responsibilities, results, skills, education. An old resume or a few honest bullet points is plenty. Then copy the full text of the job posting you're targeting. The more real detail you give, the better and more truthful the result.
Step 2: Paste both, then this
Start a new chat, paste your experience and the job posting, and paste the prompt below.
Paste this into Claude (with your experience + the job posting)Above is my work experience and the job posting I'm applying for.
Write me a resume and a cover letter tailored to this specific role.
For the resume: lead with a short summary, then experience as clear
bullet points that highlight results and use the skills and keywords
from the posting where they truly match my background. Keep it honest
- only use what's in my experience, never invent jobs or numbers.
For the cover letter: 3 short paragraphs that connect my experience
to what they're asking for, in a confident but natural voice. If
anything important is missing from my experience, ask me before you
write.Step 3: Review, then make it true and yours
Read every line. Claude is told not to invent anything, but you are the final check - make sure every claim is accurate and sounds like you. Tweak freely: "more concise," "emphasize my management experience," "make the cover letter warmer." Then copy it into your document and apply.
Common questions
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You paste your experience and the job posting into a normal chat with Claude and paste a prompt. There is no terminal and nothing to install beyond the free Claude app or claude.ai.
Will it make up experience I don't have?
The prompt specifically tells it not to invent jobs, numbers, or skills - only to use what you provide. You're still the final check: read every line and make sure each claim is true before you send it. An honest resume is the only one worth using.
Can it tailor to a specific job?
Yes - that's the point. Paste the actual job posting and Claude mirrors the skills and language the employer used where they genuinely match your background, which is what makes a resume stand out over a generic one.
What about resume-screening software?
Ask Claude for the keywords from the posting to include, and it helps you match the terms those filters look for - honestly, based on your real experience. Getting past the automated screen is often the first hurdle before a human reads it.
Can it write the cover letter too?
Yes. The prompt produces a short, tailored cover letter alongside the resume, connecting your experience to the role. You can adjust the tone and length, or ask for a shorter email version to paste into an application.
Does this cost anything?
No. You can build your resume and cover letter on a free Claude account. The Claude Code Club community is a separate, optional $9 a month for the advanced job-search systems, but you do not need it to write one application.
