Plan a Family Vacation Itinerary and Packing List With AI
TL;DR
Planning a family trip means juggling kids' patience, a budget, and a hundred 'best things to do' lists. Tell Claude where you're going, who's coming, and what you'll spend, and it builds a day-by-day itinerary paced for your family plus a packing list so nothing's forgotten. Then you adjust by talking to it. Plain chat, no code.
What you'll have in 10 minutes
A realistic day-by-day plan for your trip - paced for kids with downtime built in, not a forced march from sight to sight - with food ideas, rough costs, and a packing list tailored to where you're going and the weather. The plan that means you're not researching at midnight in the hotel.
No travel app, no twenty browser tabs. It happens in a normal chat with Claude, the same way you'd ask any AI a question.
What you need (all free, no terminal)
- Claude - the free Claude Desktop app or claude.ai in your browser.
- Your destination, dates or length of trip, who's coming (and kids' ages), and a rough budget.
- No connectors, no command line, no code.
Step 1: Pin down the basics
Have your destination, how many days, who's going with ages, your budget, and what your family enjoys - beaches, museums, hikes, theme parks. Knowing your kids' patience level matters: a plan paced for a toddler looks nothing like one for teenagers.
Step 2: Paste the prompt
Start a new chat and paste this with your details. It tells Claude to pace the days for your family and to add a packing list at the end.
Paste this into ClaudePlan a family vacation itinerary. We're going to [destination] for
[5 days]. We are [2 adults and 2 kids aged 5 and 8] and our budget
for activities and food is about [$1,000]. We like [beaches and easy
outdoor stuff] and the kids tire by mid-afternoon.
Give me a day-by-day plan paced for young kids - one or two main
things a day with downtime, not a packed schedule. For each day:
morning, afternoon, a food idea, and a rough cost. Keep the total
near my budget and flag free or cheap options. At the end, give me a
packing list tailored to this place and time of year. Ask me anything
you need first.Step 3: Shape it to your family
Claude returns the itinerary and packing list. Adjust freely: "the kids will melt down - add more rest," "one rainy-day option per day," "cheaper food," "we have a car." It rebuilds as you go. Save the final plan to your phone for the trip.
Common questions
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You describe your trip in a normal chat with Claude and paste a prompt. There is no terminal, no command line, and nothing to install beyond the free Claude app or claude.ai.
Can it really pace a trip for young kids?
Yes - that's what the prompt asks for. It keeps the days light, one or two main activities with downtime, instead of a packed adult schedule. Tell it your kids' ages and patience level and it adjusts the pace.
Will it know current prices and opening hours?
Treat costs as rough estimates and double-check specifics like hours, tickets, and bookings on the official sites before you go. Claude is great for building the plan and the budget shape; confirm time-sensitive details yourself.
Can it build the packing list too?
Yes. The prompt asks for a packing list tailored to your destination and the season, so you're not packing for the wrong weather. You can ask it to split the list by person or add a kids' carry-on list.
What if plans change once we're there?
Just tell Claude - swap a rained-out beach day for an indoor plan, add a rest day, or rework the budget on the fly. It's a conversation, so the itinerary flexes with the trip.
Does this cost anything?
No. You can plan the whole trip on a free Claude account. The Claude Code Club community is a separate, optional $9 a month for the advanced travel-planning systems, but you do not need it to plan one vacation.
