What VoiceStudio is

VoiceStudio is an open-source desktop app for voice cloning, voice design, video dubbing, dictation, transcription and audiobooks. Everything runs on your own computer, so there are no per-minute credits. The README lists support for 646 languages.

Step 1: Check your computer first

  • Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer), Windows or Linux: yes, it runs locally.
  • Intel Mac: no. The app opens, but the local engine can't run, because PyTorch no longer ships Intel Mac builds. The project's own macOS guide says this.
  • Disk space: plan for about 10 GB free for the app, its Python environment and the model weights.
  • macOS version: 13.3 (Ventura) or newer.

Step 2: Install VoiceStudio

Option 1: one command (Mac or Linux). This is the install from the project's README. It downloads the release and checks it with SHA-256.

Option 2: let Claude Code install it. The README has a prompt made for coding agents. Paste it into Claude Code:

Step 3: Clone your voice

  1. 1Open VoiceStudio and go to Voice cloning.
  2. 2Add a clean recording of your voice. The project recommends a clear 3 to 10 second clip with no music or background noise.
  3. 3Install the voice model when the app asks. The first download is a few GB.
  4. 4Type your script and hit generate. It reads it back in your voice.

The same app also dubs videos into other languages, designs brand new voices from a text description, and turns long text into audiobooks.

Step 4: Connect it to Claude Code

VoiceStudio has a built-in MCP server. While the app is open, it runs at http://localhost:3900/mcp/ on your own computer, so there's nothing extra to start. Add it to Claude Code with one command:

Then just ask Claude in plain words. It can generate speech, clone a voice from a clip, design a voice, transcribe audio and list your voices.

Licenses: read this before you use it for work

  • The app is AGPL-3.0. Using it is fine. If you modify it and run it as a hosted service, you have to publish your source code.
  • The default voice model is non-commercial. The OmniVoice model weights are released under CC-BY-NC. Use them for personal projects, and check the model license before any client or paid work.
  • Only clone voices you have permission to use. Your own voice is fine. Someone else's needs their consent.

VoiceStudio vs ElevenLabs

ElevenLabs lists professional voice cloning on its Creator plan at $22 a month (list price, checked September 29, 2026). VoiceStudio is free and runs locally, with no credits. The trade-off: it uses your own computer's power and disk, it takes setup, and the default model is non-commercial. If you need a commercial license today, a paid plan may still be the simpler choice.

  • Is VoiceStudio free?
