Prompt Master: The Free Claude Skill That Writes the Prompt You Meant
TL;DR
Prompt Master is a free, MIT-licensed Claude skill by nidhinjs with over 14,000 stars on GitHub. Tell it what you want and which tool it's for (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, Midjourney and more). If something critical is missing it asks up to 3 questions, then hands back one ready-to-paste prompt. Install it in Claude under Customize > Skills > Upload a skill, or clone it into ~/.claude/skills for Claude Code.
Most bad AI output starts with a vague prompt: you type one rushed sentence, get the wrong thing, and re-prompt three more times. Prompt Master is a Claude skill that does the prompt writing for you. You describe what you want in plain words, name the tool, and it returns a prompt shaped for that tool.
14,018 stars on October 3, 2026. Version 1.8.0, last updated August 24, 2026. MIT license. Just text: one SKILL.md plus two reference files of templates and patterns, and no scripts.
What it does with your messy sentence
- 1Works out which tool the prompt is for.
- 2Pulls out what you actually want: the task, input, output, constraints, context, audience, memory, success criteria and examples.
- 3Asks at most 3 questions, and only if something critical is missing.
- 4Picks the right prompt structure for that tool (it has 13 templates) without making you choose.
- 5Cuts every word that doesn't change the output.
- 6Gives you one clean prompt block to copy, with a one-line note on why it's built that way.
It only switches on when you ask it to write, fix or adapt a prompt for a specific tool. Normal chat and coding requests are left alone. The skill runs inside Claude, and you paste the prompt it writes into whichever tool you're using.
Install it in the Claude app
- 1Download the repo as a ZIP: on github.com/nidhinjs/prompt-master, click the green Code button, then Download ZIP.
- 2Unzip it and rename the folder from prompt-master-main to prompt-master.
- 3Zip the prompt-master folder again, so the ZIP holds the folder rather than loose files.
- 4In Claude, go to Customize > Skills, click the + button, then + Create skill, then Upload a skill, and upload your ZIP.
- 5Check the skill is toggled on in your skills list.
Steps 2 and 3 are our addition. GitHub names the downloaded folder prompt-master-main, while the skill is named prompt-master, and Anthropic's help center says the folder name must match the skill's name and the ZIP must hold the folder as its root. On a Mac, this does it in one go from your Downloads folder:
bashcd ~/Downloads
unzip -q prompt-master-main.zip
mv prompt-master-main prompt-master
zip -r prompt-master.zip prompt-masterAnthropic's official steps for turning on skills, uploading a ZIP, and fixing upload errors.
Install it in Claude Code
Clone it into your personal skills folder, then start a new session:
bashmkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
git clone https://github.com/nidhinjs/prompt-master.git ~/.claude/skills/prompt-masterThe author marks this route "Not Suggested" and recommends the Claude app upload. Good news if you use both: Anthropic says skills you turn on in your Claude account also load in Claude Code (version 2.1.273 or later) when you sign in with the same account. Run /skills to see them listed under claude.ai sync.
Try it: copy-paste requests
Adapted from the README's examples, plus one of ours. Name the tool every time, since the skill confirms the target tool before it writes anything.
promptWrite me a prompt for Cursor to refactor my auth module
I need a prompt for Claude Code to build a REST API, ask me what you need to know
Here's a bad prompt I wrote for ChatGPT, fix it: [paste prompt]
Generate a Midjourney prompt for a cyberpunk city at night
Write me a prompt for Claude to turn my meeting notes into a short, friendly follow-up email to a client
/prompt-master
I want to ask Claude Code to build a todo app with React and SupabaseWhat you get back
This is the README's own example. The request was "Write me a midjourney prompt for a realistic samurai standing in the rain at night", and Prompt Master returned:
promptlone samurai standing in heavy rain at night, traditional armor,
neon reflections on wet cobblestone street, cinematic lighting,
dramatic shadows, fog, ultra detailed, photorealistic,
shallow depth of field --ar 16:9 --v 6 --style raw
negative: blurry, low quality, watermark, cartoon, anime, extra limbsFor coding tools it goes the other way and gets very specific: exact colors, file scope, what not to touch, and a "done when" checklist, so Claude Code or Cursor has nothing to guess.
Tools it writes for
The README lists profiles for Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Gemini, Grok, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot, Bolt, v0, Lovable, Devin, Perplexity, Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI, Sora, Runway, ElevenLabs, Zapier, Make and n8n, among others. For a tool it doesn't know, it asks 4 questions to work out how that tool wants to be prompted.
Now you just say what you want and let it do the prompting. Inside the Claude Code Club we share the skills we actually run every day, the ones we build ourselves, and help each other set them up. It's nine dollars a month at https://www.skool.com/claudecodeclub/about. Everything on this page works without it.
Common questions
Is Prompt Master free?
Yes. It's an open-source skill under the MIT license. You need a Claude account with Code execution and file creation turned on, and Anthropic says skills work on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.
Where do I upload a skill in Claude?
Go to Customize > Skills, click the + button, choose + Create skill, then Upload a skill. If you don't see Skills, turn on Code execution and file creation in Settings > Capabilities first.
Why did my skill upload fail?
The most likely cause with this repo is the folder name. GitHub's ZIP names it prompt-master-main, and Anthropic's help center says the folder name must match the skill name. Rename the folder to prompt-master, zip it again and re-upload.
Does it work for ChatGPT and Cursor?
It writes prompts for them. The skill itself runs in Claude (the app or Claude Code), then you paste the prompt it gives you into ChatGPT, Cursor or whichever tool you named.
Does it work in Claude Code?
Yes. Either clone it into ~/.claude/skills/prompt-master, or upload it in the Claude app and sign in to Claude Code with the same account. Anthropic says enabled skills sync to Claude Code version 2.1.273 or later.
