Plan a Month of School Lunches With AI

5 minute readUpdated June 2026Explore more

TL;DR

Packing lunch is a tiny decision you have to make 180 times a year, and it's exhausting. Tell Claude your child's tastes and any allergies, and it plans a month of lunches with no repeats - balanced, packable, and kid-approved - plus a shopping list. The daily 'what do I pack' question disappears. Plain chat, no code.

What you'll have in 5 minutes

A full month of school lunches with no boring repeats - a main, sides, and a snack for each day, balanced and actually packable, built around what your child will eat and any allergies or school rules (like nut-free). Plus a shopping list so you can stock up. The end of standing at the fridge every morning wondering what to pack.

No meal-planning app, no Pinterest rabbit hole. It happens in a normal chat with Claude.

What you need (all free, no terminal)

  • Claude - the free Claude Desktop app or claude.ai in your browser.
  • What your child likes and won't eat, any allergies, school rules (nut-free, no microwave), and whether they have a fridge or need no-chill options.
  • No connectors, no command line, no code.

Step 1: Know your kid's lunch rules

Jot down what your child actually eats, the foods that always come home untouched, any allergies, and your school's rules (many are nut-free; some have no way to heat food). Note whether lunches stay cold until midday so you avoid things that spoil.

Step 2: Paste the prompt

Start a new chat and paste this with your details. It asks Claude for variety, balance, and a shopping list.

Paste this into ClaudePlan a month (about 20 school days) of lunches for my [7-year-old].
They love [pasta, cheese, fruit] and won't eat [anything spicy or
soggy]. Allergies/rules: [nut-free school, no way to heat food, stays
cold in a lunchbox].

For each day give a main, a couple of sides, and a snack - balanced
and packable, with no main repeating more than once a week. Keep it
realistic for a busy morning (lots of prep-ahead and grab-and-go).
Then give me a shopping list grouped by store section to stock up.
Flag a few that can be made the night before.

Step 3: Tweak and rotate

Claude gives you the month. Adjust it: "more finger foods," "my kid stopped liking wraps," "add a few hot-thermos options." When something's a hit or a flop, tell Claude and it adjusts next time. Pin the plan to the fridge and you're set for weeks.

Common questions

  • Do I need to know how to code?

No. You describe your child's lunch needs in a normal chat with Claude and paste a prompt. There is no terminal and nothing to install beyond the free Claude app or claude.ai.

  • Can it handle allergies and school rules?

Yes. Put nut-free, dairy-free, no-heating, or any other rule in the prompt and Claude plans around it. Always double-check labels yourself for serious allergies - the plan is a guide, and you're the final safety check.

  • Will my picky kid actually eat these?

As much as you tell it to. List the foods your child loves and refuses, and Claude builds the month around the wins. When a lunch comes home untouched, tell it and the next round adjusts.

  • What about lunches that don't need a fridge?

Say so in the prompt and Claude sticks to foods that stay safe cold in a lunchbox until midday, or suggests using an ice pack. You can also ask for thermos ideas if your child likes warm food.

  • Can it give me a shopping list?

Yes. The prompt produces a shopping list grouped by store section so you can stock up for the weeks ahead, and it can flag which lunches are easy to prep the night before.

  • Does this cost anything?

No. You can plan a month of lunches on a free Claude account. The Claude Code Club community is a separate, optional $9 a month for the advanced lunch-planning systems, but you do not need it to plan lunches.
