3 MCPs That Give Claude Code Up-to-Date Docs (Context7, GitMCP, Docs MCP Server)
TL;DR
Claude Code writes code from what it learned in training, and libraries keep changing. These 3 free MCP servers let it read the current docs instead. Context7 pulls the latest docs for popular libraries, GitMCP turns any GitHub repo into a docs server, and Docs MCP Server indexes any docs site privately on your own machine. Each section has the GitHub link, live star count and install line.

3 MCPs that give Claude Code up-to-date docs
Star counts below were pulled from the GitHub API on October 4, 2026, so they will be higher by the time you read this. Every install line is copied from the repo README unless we say otherwise.
Why this matters: AI models write code from what they learned in training, and libraries change after that. A study of 16 code-generating models (Spracklen et al., USENIX Security 2025) found that 19.7% of the packages they recommended did not exist. Commercial models did better, at about 5.2%, and the study predates current Claude models, so treat it as a fact about AI code in general, not a Claude measurement. A docs MCP fixes the root cause: Claude reads the current docs instead of guessing.

What it does: Free, local, open source alternative to Context7. Index any docs site on your own machine.
How to install it:

Quick start
- 1Install Context7 first. It covers most popular libraries with one setup command.
- 2Add GitMCP for any GitHub project Context7 does not cover.
- 3Use Docs MCP Server when you want the docs indexed privately on your own machine.
- 4Ask Claude to check the docs before it writes code against any library you are not sure about.

Common questions
Are these 3 MCPs free?
Yes. All three are free and open source. GitMCP runs as a free hosted server, and Docs MCP Server runs locally on your machine.
Which one should I install first?
Context7. It covers most popular libraries and installs with one command: npx ctx7 setup --claude.
Where does the GitMCP install line come from?
The GitMCP README gives the hosted server URL, https://gitmcp.io/docs. We wrapped it in Claude Code's documented claude mcp add --transport http command, so the line is built from the official server URL rather than copied from the README.
Does this stop Claude from ever making up a package?
No tool removes that risk completely. A docs MCP makes Claude check the real, current docs, which cuts down on guessing. Still read what it installs before you run it.
