10 Repos That Turn Claude Code Into a Video Editor (OpenMontage, HyperFrames, Remotion and More)
TL;DR
Claude Code can't edit video on its own. These 10 free GitHub repos give it the tools. OpenMontage is a full agent-run video studio. HyperFrames and Remotion let Claude Code build videos from HTML or React code, so every change is one prompt. OpenCut is a free, open source CapCut alternative. Manim makes 3Blue1Brown-style explainer animations, and yt-dlp downloads video and audio from thousands of sites. Claude Video Vision lets Claude Code actually watch your footage, FireRed OpenStoryline edits from plain instructions, Sprite Gen makes animated 2D characters, and Dream Loop builds 3D scenes that an AI critic keeps improving. Each section has the GitHub link, live star count and the install steps from the repo's own README.

The 10 repos that turn Claude Code into a video editor
Star counts below were pulled from GitHub on October 2, 2026, so they will be higher by the time you read this. The list covers four jobs: make whole videos with an agent, build videos from code, edit and find the best moments in footage and create animations and characters. You don't need all 10. Start with the one that matches the video you want to make this week.
1. OpenMontage: a full video studio run by your agent
62,451 stars on October 2, 2026. AGPL 3.0 license.
What it does: an open source, agentic video production system. You describe the video in plain language and your agent handles research, scripting, asset generation, editing and the final render. It ships 10+ production pipelines (explainers, talking heads, screen demos, trailers, documentary montages and more) and works with Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf and Codex.
How to install it: you need Python 3.10+, FFmpeg and Node.js 18+. Then:
bashgit clone https://github.com/calesthio/OpenMontage.git
cd OpenMontage
make setupOpen the folder in Claude Code and tell it what you want:
promptMake a 60-second animated explainer about how neural networks learn2. HyperFrames: Claude Code writes a web page, you get a video
55,885 stars on October 2, 2026. Apache 2.0 license. Made by HeyGen.
What it does: an open source framework that turns HTML, CSS, media and animations into MP4 videos. Claude already writes great web pages, so it can design kinetic text, product promos, captions and motion graphics, then render them as a finished video.
How to install it in Claude Code:
bashclaude plugin marketplace add heygen-com/hyperframes
claude plugin install hyperframes@hyperframesThen try a prompt like this:
promptUsing /hyperframes, create a 10-second product intro with a fade-in title, a background video, and subtle background music.Prefer the command line? The README also shows:
bashnpx hyperframes init my-video
cd my-video
npx hyperframes preview
npx hyperframes render3. Remotion: videos made from code, so every change is one prompt
61,582 stars on October 2, 2026. Custom Remotion license (free for individuals and small companies).
What it does: make videos with React code. Because the video is code, Claude can change the text, timing, colors or layout with one prompt and re-render. Remotion describes itself as "video tools for the agent era" and has official Agent Skills in its docs.
How to install it: if you already have Node.js installed, run:
bashnpx create-video@latest4. OpenCut: the free, open source CapCut alternative
91,253 stars on October 2, 2026. MIT license.
What it does: a free and open source video editor for web, desktop and mobile. A free, private editor you fully own.
Fastest way to try it: open opencut.app in your browser. The README says it still runs the classic version, which is the one to use today.
To run the new version yourself: install proto (Linux, macOS, WSL):
bashbash <(curl -fsSL https://moonrepo.dev/install/proto.sh)Then, from the repo root:
bashproto use
moon run web:dev5. Manim: explainer animations from a script
94,471 stars on October 2, 2026. MIT license.
What it does: the animation engine behind the 3Blue1Brown YouTube channel. You write a short Python script and it renders precise programmatic animations, designed for explanatory math videos. Claude can write those scripts for you from a plain description.
How to install it: you need Python 3.10 or higher, plus FFmpeg and OpenGL. LaTeX is optional (for math text). Then:
bashpip install manimgl
manimglOn a Mac, the README installs FFmpeg and LaTeX with Homebrew first:
bashbrew install ffmpeg mactex6. yt-dlp: pull reference clips and audio into your edit
195,019 stars on October 2, 2026. Unlicense (public domain).
What it does: a command-line tool that downloads video and audio from thousands of sites. Claude can run it for you to grab a reference clip or a sound you have the rights to use.
How to install it: the README offers standalone release files (yt-dlp_macos is the recommended one for Mac) or pip. The pip command from the README installs the nightly build, which it recommends for regular users:
bashpython -m pip install -U --pre "yt-dlp[default]"Then run `yt-dlp` followed by a video URL.
7. Claude Video Vision: Claude Code watches your footage
1,341 stars on October 2, 2026. MIT license. A small, newer project.
What it does: a Claude Code plugin that lets Claude watch and understand videos. It pulls frames with ffmpeg and transcribes the audio with timestamps, so Claude can find the best moments in your footage, answer questions about a clip, or summarize a YouTube video.
How to install it: inside Claude Code, run these one at a time:
prompt/plugin marketplace add https://github.com/jordanrendric/claude-video-visionprompt/plugin install claude-video-visionThen run the setup wizard and watch a video:
prompt/claude-video-vision:setup-video-vision
/watch-video path/to/video.mp4 "what are the three best moments for a short clip?"8. FireRed OpenStoryline: tell it the story, it cuts the video
3,455 stars on October 2, 2026. Apache 2.0 license.
What it does: an AI video editing agent you talk to. It finds and organizes clips, writes the script and narration, recommends music, voiceover and fonts, and lets you cut, swap or reorder clips with plain-English instructions. You can save an editing style as a Skill and reuse it on new footage.
How to install it: clone the repo and create a Python 3.11 environment with Conda:
bashgit clone https://github.com/FireRedTeam/FireRed-OpenStoryline.git
cd FireRed-OpenStoryline
conda create -n storyline python=3.11
conda activate storyline
sh build_env.shThe repo ships built-in Claude Code Skills. Start Claude Code from the repo's root folder and run:
prompt/openstoryline-install
/openstoryline-use9. Sprite Gen: custom animated characters for your videos
2,278 stars on October 2, 2026. Apache 2.0 license. A small, newer project.
What it does: a Codex and Claude skill plus a Python tool that turns one character drawing into clean, transparent 2D sprites and animation loops (idle, walk, run, jump, attack). Use them in videos, scenes or games.
How to install it: it needs Python 3.11+. Clone the repo, then inside it run the README's quickstart:
bashpython3 -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate
pip install -e .
sprite-gen --help10. Dream Loop: 3D shots that improve themselves
1,615 stars on October 2, 2026. MIT license. The smallest repo on this list.
What it does: an agent skill that builds a game, app or scene with impressive visuals using a closed loop. The AI imagines a target screenshot, builds toward it, then a separate AI critic compares the result to the target and sends feedback until it is satisfied.
How to install it:
bashnpx skills add achimala/dream-loopQuick start
- 1Install Claude Video Vision and have Claude watch your latest recording to find the best moments.
- 2Add the HyperFrames plugin and ask for a 10-second intro or captions for that clip.
- 3Want a whole video from one prompt? Clone OpenMontage and try it with zero API keys first.
- 4If you use Remotion for a business, check its license before you ship client work.

Common questions
Are these 10 repos free?
Yes, all 10 are free to download. Some can cost money depending on how you use them: Remotion needs a paid Company License for for-profit organizations with more than 3 employees, and OpenMontage, FireRed OpenStoryline, Sprite Gen and Dream Loop can call paid AI services if you add those API keys.
Which one should I install first?
If you already have footage, start with Claude Video Vision so Claude can watch it and find the best moments. If you want Claude to make a video from scratch, start with the HyperFrames plugin. It installs with two commands.
Do I need to know how to code to use these?
No. HyperFrames, Remotion and Manim are code-based, but Claude writes the code for you. You describe the video in plain English, check the preview, and ask for changes.
Is it legal to download videos with yt-dlp?
The tool itself is legal, but downloading a video does not give you the right to reuse it. Only download content you own, have permission for, or that is licensed for reuse.
