Use Claude as a Personal Trainer With Your Apple Health Data (Free Apple Health MCP)

6 minute readUpdated October 2026Explore more

TL;DR

apple-health-mcp is a free, MIT licensed MCP server by Neil Pullman (GitHub: neiltron) that lets Claude answer questions about your sleep, workouts, activity and heart data. You export your data from your iPhone with the free Simple Health Export CSV app, unzip it on your computer, and point the server at that folder. The server runs locally and makes no network requests itself, but the answers it pulls are sent to Claude to write the reply. Not medical advice.

neiltron/apple-health-mcp

Local-first Apple Health MCP server. 570 stars on October 3, 2026, MIT licensed, last updated October 2, 2026. Lets Claude answer questions about your sleep, workouts, activity and heart data from a local export.

It is an MCP server, which is a small program that gives Claude new tools. This one gives Claude three: health_schema (see what data you have), health_query (run a read-only analysis query on it) and health_report (a weekly, monthly or custom summary). Under the hood it loads your exported CSV files into DuckDB in memory.

How private is it, exactly?

  • Your health export stays on your computer. The server reads the files in place, does not upload the export, and makes no network requests, per the README.
  • The answers do go to Claude. The README says query results returned to your MCP client may be sent to that client's model provider. In plain words: when you ask about your week, the numbers it pulls are sent to Anthropic so Claude can write the reply. Your raw files are not uploaded, but the results of each question are.
  • It can reach your whole history. There is no date window, so only run it in a client you trust with that data, and keep it on your own machine (the README says not to expose it to an untrusted network).

What you need

  • An iPhone with Apple Health data.
  • The free Simple Health Export CSV app from the App Store (the server only supports this app's CSV format, not Apple's own export.xml).
  • A computer with Node.js 22 or newer (nodejs.org).
  • Claude Desktop or Claude Code (any MCP client that can run a local stdio server).
Simple Health Export CSV (App Store)

Free iPhone app by Eric Wolter. The exporter the repo's README requires.

Step 1: export your Health data

  1. 1Install and open Simple Health Export CSV on your iPhone.
  2. 2Select All and choose the time range to export.
  3. 3Move the archive to your computer (AirDrop, iCloud Drive or a cable).
  4. 4Unzip it and note the full path to the folder, for example /Users/you/health-export.

Step 2a: connect it to Claude Desktop

Open ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json (in Claude Desktop: Settings, Developer, Edit Config) and add this, with your own folder path. If the file already has an mcpServers section, add the apple-health block inside it.

json{
  "mcpServers": {
    "apple-health": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@neiltron/apple-health-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "HEALTH_DATA_DIR": "/path/to/your/unzipped/health-export"
      }
    }
  }
}

Quit and reopen Claude Desktop so it picks up the change.

Step 2b: or connect it to Claude Code

Run this in your terminal with your own folder path. The -- separates Claude Code's options from the command that starts the server, as Anthropic's MCP docs describe.

bashclaude mcp add --env HEALTH_DATA_DIR=/path/to/your/unzipped/health-export --transport stdio apple-health -- npx -y @neiltron/apple-health-mcp

Start Claude Code and run /mcp to check that apple-health is connected.

Step 3: ask your trainer

Copy these in. Each one tells Claude to look at the data first and to be careful with duplicates, because an iPhone and a watch can both record the same steps or heart rate.

promptUse the apple-health tools. Run health_schema first so you know what data I have. Then give me a health_report for the last 7 days: sleep each night, workouts (type and duration), daily steps and average heart rate. Watch for duplicate readings from different devices (sourceName). Keep it short and tell me which numbers you are unsure about.
promptAct as my personal trainer. Look at my last 14 days of sleep and workouts from Apple Health. Then plan my next 7 days of training: which days to push, which days to go easy or rest, and why, based on how I actually slept and moved. I train [days per week] for [goal, e.g. general fitness / a 10K]. This is general fitness planning, not medical advice.
promptCompare this month to last month from my Apple Health data: average hours asleep, number of workouts, total workout minutes and average daily steps. Show it as a small table and point out the one change that stands out most.

Good to know

  • It reads a one-time export. To update the data, export again from the app and replace the folder.
  • Each time the server starts it reloads from the CSV files. Nothing is saved between runs.
  • It is a small community repo, not an Apple or Anthropic product. Read the README before you install it.

Now you just get a plan built on how you actually slept and moved. Inside the Claude Code Club we share the MCP servers and setups we actually use and help each other connect them. It's nine dollars a month at https://www.skool.com/claudecodeclub/about. Everything on this page works without it.

Common questions

  • Does my Apple Health data get uploaded anywhere?

    The export files stay on your computer, and the server itself makes no network requests. But the results of each question are sent to Claude so it can answer, so Anthropic sees the numbers you ask about. Only use it in a Claude account you trust with that data.

  • Can I use Apple's own Health export?

    Not right now. The README says the native Apple Health export.xml format is not supported. You need the CSV export from the free Simple Health Export CSV app.

  • Does it work with Claude Code as well as Claude Desktop?

    Yes. It is a standard local stdio MCP server. The README shows the Claude Desktop config, and in Claude Code you add it with claude mcp add and the same command and HEALTH_DATA_DIR setting.

  • Is this medical advice?

    No. It summarizes recorded data, and Claude can make mistakes. The repo's README says its health reports are not medical advice. Ask a doctor about anything health related.

  • Does it update automatically?

    No. It reads the export you give it. Export again from Simple Health Export CSV and replace the folder when you want fresh data.
