1,000+ Free Claude Skills In One Place (And The 23 To Install First)
TL;DR
VoltAgent's awesome-agent-skills is a free GitHub list of more than 1,100 agent skills from official dev teams and the community, with over 35,000 stars. A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file in it. Drop the folder into ~/.claude/skills and Claude Code learns a new job. Below are the 23 we would install first, grouped by what they do, plus three ways to install them.
Someone put over a thousand free Claude skills in one place. It's a GitHub repo called awesome-agent-skills, run by the VoltAgent team, and it collects skills published by real engineering teams like Anthropic, Stripe, Cloudflare, Vercel, Sentry, Figma, Google, and Microsoft, plus the community skills that people actually use. This page is the list, our short version of it, and how to get any skill running in Claude Code in a couple of minutes.
The full list. On October 3, 2026 it had 35,157 stars and its README listed 1,119 skill entries across official team sections and community categories like development and testing, marketing, productivity, and context engineering. MIT licensed, free to browse, and it works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and more.
What a skill actually is
A skill is a folder with one required file in it, SKILL.md. The top of that file holds a name and a short description. The rest is instructions, and the folder can also hold scripts, templates, and reference docs.
Claude reads the descriptions of every skill you have installed and pulls one in when your request matches it. You can also call one directly by typing a slash and its name. That's why it works like an app: you install it once and Claude knows a new job every session after, without you pasting the same instructions again.
Install a skill in Claude Code (three ways)
Pick whichever fits the skill. Most repos below support at least one of these.
- 1Plugin marketplace. Inside an interactive Claude Code session, add the marketplace, then install the plugin. Anthropic's official skills install this way with two commands (shown below).
- 2The skills CLI. Run `npx skills add owner/repo --skill skill-name -a claude-code` in your terminal. Add `-g` to install it for every project instead of just the current one, or `--list` to see what a repo contains first.
- 3Drop the folder in. Copy the skill's folder into `~/.claude/skills/` to use it in every project, or into `.claude/skills/` inside a project to use it there only. The folder must contain SKILL.md.
bash# 1) Anthropic's official skills, inside Claude Code
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
# 2) Any GitHub skill repo, from your terminal
npx skills add coreyhaines31/marketingskills --skill copywriting -a claude-code -g
# 3) Manual: clone, then copy one skill folder in
git clone https://github.com/anthropics/skills.git
cp -r skills/skills/frontend-design ~/.claude/skills/Then check it landed: type / in Claude Code and look for the skill's name. If it doesn't show up, run /reload-skills or start a new session. To use it, either ask for the job in plain words or type the slash command.

How to pick from the other thousand
- Start with the official sections at the top of the list. A skill published by the team that makes the tool knows that tool best.
- Install for a job you do every week, not for a job you might do someday. Five skills you use beat fifty you forgot about.
- Check the source repo is alive: recent commits and real stars. Some links in a list this big go stale as repos get reorganized.
- Read the SKILL.md before you install. If it asks for broad permissions or runs scripts you don't understand, skip it.
Now you just pick a skill and give Claude a new job in seconds. Inside the Claude Code Club we share the skills we actually run every day, the ones we build ourselves, and help each other set them up. It's nine dollars a month at https://www.skool.com/claudecodeclub/about. Everything on this page works without it.
Common questions
Are these Claude skills really free?
The list itself is free and MIT licensed, and the skills are free to download. A few skills connect to paid services, such as a Brave Search API key, a CodeRabbit account, or Replicate model runs, and we flag those on each pick. Anthropic's document skills are free to use under Anthropic's terms rather than an open source license.
How many skills are actually in the list?
On October 3, 2026 the README listed 1,119 skill entries, and its badge said 1,497+. The gap is likely because some entries are packs that hold several skills each. Either way, the 1,000+ claim holds.
Where do I put a skill folder for Claude Code?
Put it in ~/.claude/skills/ to use it in every project, or in .claude/skills/ inside a project to use it there only. Each skill gets its own folder, and that folder must contain a SKILL.md file.
Do these work outside Claude Code?
Yes. The list says the skills work with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, Windsurf, and more. Each tool reads skills from its own folder, and the repo has a table of the paths.
Are these skills safe to install?
Not automatically. The list is curated, not security audited, and a skill can run code on your machine. Read the SKILL.md and any scripts first, prefer skills from official teams, and skip anything you don't understand.
